NCC Keen Into Telecom Consumers’ Protection, Holds Campus Conversation in Ibadan.



The Nigeria Communications Commission in continuation of their program to sensitize Nigerians on Telecom Consumers’ Protection advanced to the premiere University of Ibadan for campus conversation among the students and the youths in general. The conversation which is the 5th edition addressed data depletion issues and tips on data usage for better quality of experience.


In her welcome address, Mrs. Mistura Haruna, enunciates that the rationale behind the conversation is to protect and promote the interest of the consumer (Students). 


The Chairman, Board of Commissioners of Nigeria Communications Commission NCC,  Professor Adeolu Akande, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chairman, Mrs. Afure Iloka, appreciates the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale – mni, FAS, Management and Staff of the University for the opportunity to organize the Telecom Consumer Conversation (Campus Conversation) in this institution.

 

According to him "The Telecom Consumer Conversations have become very important for the Board and Management of NCC in implementing mandates of the Commission, as enshrined in the Nigerian Communication Act (NCA), 2003. One of the mandates is the ‘Protection of the rights and interests of Consumers’.” 


“This is also in tandem with the Strategic Management Plan (SMP 2020-2024) of the Executive Vice Chairman: Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, which is to ‘Improve Quality of Experience & Stakeholder Satisfaction’. 


The Conversation further stressed on the protection of the rights, privileges and interests of telecommunications consumers, including people living with Disability and the Elderly through information dissemination by noting that, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) systems have changed the way we live, work and conduct business transactions. 

The internet has become an integral part of the modern information society where all kinds of information is available in different formats for the end-users. These main functions depend on an independent network that is referred to as “Cyberspace”. 


"The Commission is inundated with frequent complaints from the telecom consumers on the depletion of their internet data which is why the Nigerian Communications Commissions (NCC) through the Consumer Affairs Bureau (CAB) has embarked on this sensitization exercise to educate telecom consumers on the various ways to manage internet data". 


"On behalf of the Board, Management and staff of the NCC, I use this opportunity once again to thank the Management and staff of the University of Ibadan for this awesome opportunity to disseminate information". He expressed. 


"I urge your full attention and participation as every aspect of the program has been designed to enable you as a critical Stakeholder to be better informed on issues related to data depletion". Professor Adeolu concluded.


When addressing the student on how to contact the commission especially for complaints, the head of consumer affairs NCC, Mr Ayanbanji Ojo explained that the 622-toll free call center is always available to receive complaints from consumers. He assures the students that anytime their network providers fail to solve their challenges, they can make use of the call center. He also enumerated the usefulness of 2442 (Do-Not-Disturb me code).


Mr Ayanbanji disclosed that, by 17th of May,2023, the commission would launch a unified USSD code for all network providers in Nigeria.  The Unified USSD Codes for all Mobile Network in Nigeria;

When discussing the role of youths in indigenous telecom, Team lead, Nigeria Office for Developing Indigenous Telecoms (NODITS), Engr Babaganadigina, explained the importance of youths in indigenous telecoms by expatiate on the power of indigenous telecoms in building statistics that can resolve some youth's challenges. 


In his contributions, Head of New Media and Information Security of Nigeria Communications Commission NCC, represented by Mrs. Aminat, who speaks extensively on cybersecurity and child online protection. Mrs. Aminat warns the students to be mindful of unauthorized websites when searching on the Internet. 


In his appreciation to the commission on behalf of over 45000 students of university of Ibadan, the president Student Union, Adelowo Adeyinka thanks the commission for bringing such a knowledgeable program to the institution.


Adeyinka also appealed to NCC to provide more gadgets for the students to aid their reading and learning activities as he was aware that the commission has done it in the past.


When giving his closing remarks, Ibadan zonal chairman NCC, Mr Ekisola Oladosu appreciates all the students for their cooperation during the program and wishes them best of luck in their various endeavors.
