NCC Calls for More Telecom Consumers’ Protection, Holds Market Conversation in Ibadan

The Nigeria Communications Commission on Wednesday kicked off a program to sensitize Nigerians on how to protect value provided by the communication networks providers. The two days program centered on taking the empowerment program to the rural area which started from the market traders in popular Ibadan market, Bodija.

According to the Head of Consumer Affairs Bureau of Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Mr Ayanbanji Ojo, the commission is aimed at taking the empowerment of consumers to the rural area and the commission is starting with the market traders.

“The program is not new but organized in such a way that brings the commission closer to the people in order to bring the information/empowerment to the consumers especially people in the market knowing that the market traders are hardly aware of the commission program due to their businesses among others.” Mr Ojo noted.

"This particular conversation is called market conversations, which allow us to establish one on one conversation with our consumer. At Bodija Market, our conversation centered on how to make good use of consumer’s data in order to reduce data wastage. We don’t only talk about that, we have also gotten some feedback from consumers on their challenges and whatever is it, we try to find solutions to them." Mr Ojo explained further.

The commission also enlightened the Bodija market traders on the reasons to report those people who are always vandalizing NCC properties and other Government properties.

Mr. Ayanbanji Ojo urged people to report vandals of any commission’s properties to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

He noted that the commission has partnered with some security agencies in which people can report anyone who vandalized both the commission properties and any government properties.

"The commission also has an MOU with Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and also assures and guarantees the safety of anyone that reports the vandals. There is room for them to receive information and there is room for them to protect the interest of the reporter."

"Also, the commission has a platform, and the platform is too free which is 622.

The commission encourages the people at the market to always make use of the toll free for any of their complaints and reports.” Mr Ojo expressed.

In their different appreciations, Alh. Musediku Oluwabukola (Chairman, Bodija Market) and Alhaja Sikirat Adebayo ( Iyaloja of Bodija Market) appreciate NCC for the intensive sensitization that expose traders in Bodija market on other benefits of mobile phones and data aside of using it for calling.

Alhaji Musiliu Olalekan, the zonal chairman of Bodija Market also encourages traders to make use of all knowledge gained during conversation with NCC which will boost their market during buying and selling. He urged all traders to see the program opportunities and the knowledge gathered on how to make use of mobile phones and data to boost their marketing.

Also present at the program is Aare Gbogbo Oloja in Ibadanland, Alh. Kareem Oladepo, among others.
